This year, the Lion & Sun Foundation co-hosted a meaningful Nowruz celebration in Enschede together with Zohre Sharifi from ChristenUnie, bringing together community members, cultural enthusiasts, and public figures to mark the Persian New Year.
This year, our organization, in collaboration with Zohre Sharifi from ChristenUnie, hosted a meaningful Nowruz celebration in Enschede. The event brought together members of the local community, cultural enthusiasts, and public figures to mark the Persian New Year — an ancient tradition symbolizing renewal, hope, and new beginnings.
At the center of the event stood the traditional Haft-Seen table, beautifully arranged with symbolic elements representing life, health, and prosperity. Guests were introduced to the rich heritage behind these customs, alongside presentations about Iranian traditions and history. The evening also featured lively Iranian music and dancing, creating a warm and joyful atmosphere.
Distinguished guests
We were honored to welcome distinguished speakers, including the Mayor of Enschede, Roelof Bleker, as well as Rachel Denneboom (VVD) and Hadassa Meijer (ChristenUnie). We were also grateful for the presence and support of Linda Wizzink (Volt), Ruud Elferink (Policy Advisor for Safety, Municipality of Enschede), Elisabeth ter Mors (district coordinator for Bothoven and Hogeland Noord–Getfert–Perik), Frieda van Limbeek and Judith Koop (ChristenUnie), Mark ter Mors (Protestant Church in Glanerbrug), and Hadi Abou Zeid (coordinator of Humanitas Twente).
We were especially pleased to see the active participation of students, employees, and alumni of the University of Twente, whose presence added to the diversity and energy of the gathering.
Food, music, and culture
Guests enjoyed a selection of traditional Iranian dishes, offering a taste of the country’s rich culinary culture, prepared by the skilled hands of members of the Iranian community. From fragrant rice dishes to classic sweets, the food played an important role in sharing the spirit of hospitality that Nowruz embodies.

A moment of reflection
At the same time, the event was not only a celebration but also a moment of reflection. We commemorated the many Iranians who have lost their lives under the current regime in Iran. While Nowruz is traditionally a joyful occasion, it also served as a reminder of resilience and the enduring hope for freedom and justice.
By bringing together culture, community, and remembrance, this gathering became more than an event — it was a statement. A statement that traditions endure, that solidarity matters, and that hope for a better future remains alive.
With gratitude
We thank everyone from the Iranian and Dutch community who helped make this event possible, including the Municipality of Enschede and the Protestant Church in Glanerbrug. We are also grateful to all those who joined us in making this Nowruz in Enschede a meaningful and unforgettable experience.
